Oscar Stanton De Priest (1871-1951) — also known as Oscar De Priest — of Chicago, Cook County, Ill. Born in Florence, Lauderdale County, Ala., March 9, 1871. Son of Alexander R. De Priest and Mary (Karsner) De Priest. Republican. Painter; real estate broker; Cook County Commissioner, 1894-1904; delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois, 1908 (alternate), 1920, 1924 (alternate), 1928, 1932, 1936; U.S. Representative from Illinois 1st District, 1929-35; defeated, 1934, 1936, 1938. Congregationalist or Presbyterian. African ancestry. Member, Elks; Freemasons; Odd Fellows. Died in Chicago, Cook County, Ill., May 12, 1951 (age 80 years, 64 days).
