Republican. Lawyer; member of Illinois state house of representatives, 1882-83; mayor of Dixon, Ill., 1888-89; U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, 1899-1905; U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, 1905-09; died in office 1909. Died in Dixon, Lee County, Ill., August 3, 1909 (age 57 years, 77 days). Interment somewhere.

Banker; member of South Dakota state house of representatives 3rd District, 1911-12; member of South Dakota state senate 3rd District, 1913-16; Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota, 1917-21; Governor of South Dakota, 1921-25; U.S. Senator from South Dakota, 1925-31; defeated, 1930; delegate to Republican National Convention from South Dakota, 1928. Episcopalian. Member, Elks; Odd Fellows; Freemasons. Died in Dixon, Lee County, Ill., September 14, 1968 (age 91 years, 127 days). Interment at Oakwood Cemetery.

      John Sherwood Dixon (1896-1973) — also known as Sherwood Dixon — of Dixon, Lee County, Ill. Born in Dixon, Lee County, Ill., June 19, 1896. Democrat. Member of Illinois Democratic State Central Committee, 1938; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 1940 (alternate), 1952, 1956 (alternate); Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, 1949-53; candidate for Governor of Illinois, 1952. Died in Dixon, Lee County, Ill., May 17, 1973 (age 76 years, 332 days). Interment at Oakwood Cemetery.

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
