Served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War; member of Illinois state house of representatives, 1854-60, 1870-71; Speaker of the Illinois State House of Representatives, 1859-60; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 1856, 1868, 1884, 1888; colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War; U.S. Representative from Illinois, 1863-65, 1873-87 (12th District 1863-65, 17th District 1873-83, 18th District 1883-87); defeated, 1864, 1866, 1886; member, Interstate Commerce Commission, 1887-97. Died in Waterloo, Monroe County, Ill., September 29, 1909 (age 85 years, 15 days). Interment at Waterloo Cemetery.
