Served in the U.S. Army during World War II; delegate to Illinois state constitutional convention, 1969-70; member of Illinois state senate, 1971-81 (42nd District 1971-73, 48th District 1973-81); candidate for U.S. Representative from Illinois 18th District, 1980. Lutheran. German ancestry. Member, Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion. Jailed for contempt of court for refusing to wear a tie. Died, of heart disease, in a hospital at Springfield, Sangamon County, Ill., November 15, 1986 (age 63 years, 92 days). Interment somewhere.

Lawyer; served in the U.S. Army during World War I; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 1932, 1940, 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964; U.S. Representative from Illinois 20th District, 1935-39; U.S. Senator from Illinois, 1939-51; defeated, 1950. Baptist. Member, American Bar Association; American Legion. Professional baseball player, 3-I League, three years. Died in Rocky Mount, Nash County, N.C., February 22, 1968 (age 76 years, 3 days). Interment at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

	The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.
	The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
