Son of John Turner Stevenson (1808-1857) and Eliza Ann (Ewing) Stevenson (1809-1889). Democrat. Lawyer; candidate for Presidential Elector for Illinois, 1864; U.S. Representative from Illinois 13th District, 1875-77, 1879-81; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 1884, 1892; Vice President of the United States, 1893-97; defeated, 1900; candidate for Governor of Illinois, 1908. Scotch-Irish ancestry. Member, Freemasons; Council on Foreign Relations; Phi Delta Theta. Died in Chicago, Cook County, Ill., June 14, 1914 (age 78 years, 234 days).
