Aswell and Elizabeth (Lyles) Aswell. Democrat. School teacher and principal; Louisiana superintendent of public instruction, 1904-08; Chancellor, University of Mississippi, 1907; president, Louisiana State Normal College, 1908-11; U.S. Representative from Louisiana 8th District, 1913-31; died in office 1931. Baptist. Died in Washington, D.C., March 16, 1931 (age 61 years, 83 days). John Hamilton Reed (b. 1862) — also known as John H. Reed — Born in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, La., March 4, 1862. President, College of West Africa, 1907; U.S. Vice Consul Genera in Monrovia, 1908-14. African ancestry. Burial location unknown.
