Son of John Buckler and Harriet (Davis) Buckler. Farmer; director, Farmers Elevator Company (Crookston, Minn.); member of Minnesota state senate 66th District, 1915-18, 1923-26, 1931-34; U.S. Representative from Minnesota 9th District, 1935-43. Baptist. Member, Eagles; Farmers Union; Farm Bureau. Died in Crookston, Polk County, Minn., January 23, 1950 (age 84 years, 88 days). Interment at Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, Minn.

  Albert Sidney Johnson Carnahan (1897-1968) — also known as A. S. J. Carnahan — of Ellsinore, Carter County, Mo. Born near Ellsinore, Carter County, Mo., January 9, 1897. Democrat. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War I; school teacher and principal; U.S. Representative from Missouri 8th District, 1945-47, 1949-61; defeated, 1946; U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, 1961-63. Baptist. Member, Freemasons. Died, in the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Rochester, Olmsted County, Minn., March 24, 1968 (age 71 years, 75 days). Interment at Carson Hill Cemetery, Near Ellsinore, Carter County, Mo.

  William Treyanne Francis (1870-1929) — also known as William T. Francis — of Minnesota. Born in Indianapolis, Marion County, Ind., March 26, 1870. Son of James Francis and Harriet (Taylor) Francis. Republican. Lawyer; worked in legal department of railroad; member of Minnesota Republican State Central Committee, 1914; Presidential Elector for Minnesota, 1920; U.S. Minister to Liberia, 1927-29, died in office 1929; U.S. Consul General in Monrovia, 1927-29, died in office 1929. Baptist. African ancestry. Member, Freemasons; NAACP; Urban League; Sigma Pi Phi; Alpha Phi Alpha. Died in Liberia, July 15, 1929 (age 59 years, 111 days). Burial location unknown.

  John Aaron Matthews (b. 1876) — also known as John A. Matthews — of Townsend, Broadwater County, Mont.; Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Mont. Born in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minn., February 1, 1876. Son of Thaddeus LeGrand Matthews and Katheryn (Pryse) Matthews. Democrat. Lawyer; Broadwater County Attorney, 1903-13; district judge in Montana 4th District, 1913-16; justice of Montana state supreme court, 1919-31; appointed 1919. Baptist. Member, Freemasons; Odd Fellows; Woodmen. Burial location unknown.

  Walter Hughes Newton (1880-1941) — also known as Walter H. Newton — of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minn. Born in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minn., October 10, 1880. Son of Thomas Rogers Newton and Mary (Hughes) Newton. Republican. Lawyer; U.S. Representative from Minnesota 5th District, 1919-29; secretary and administrative assistant to President Herbert Hoover, 1929; delegate to Republican National Convention from Minnesota, 1932. Baptist. Member, Freemasons. Died August 10, 1941 (age 60 years, 304 days). Interment at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn.

  Harold Edward Stassen (1907-2001) — also known as Harold E. Stassen — of South St. Paul, Dakota County, Minn.; Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa. Born in West St. Paul, Dakota County, Minn., April 13, 1907. Lawyer; Dakota County Attorney, 1931-38; delegate to Republican National Convention from Minnesota, 1936, 1940; Governor of Minnesota, 1939-43; resigned 1943; served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; among the founders of the United Nations, 1945 (in 2001, he was the last surviving signer of the UN Charter); president, University of Pennsylvania, 1948-53; candidate for Republican nomination for President, 1948, 1952, 1964, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992; candidate in Republican primary for Governor of Pennsylvania, 1958; Republican candidate for mayor of Philadelphia, Pa., 1959; delegate to Republican National Convention from Pennsylvania, 1960; Independent Republican candidate for U.S. Representative from Minnesota 4th District, 1986. Baptist. Member, Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Delta Sigma Rho; Gamma Eta Gamma; Freemasons; Shriners; Council on Foreign Relations. Died, at the Friendship Village nursing home, Bloomington, Hennepin County, Minn., March 4, 2001 (age 93 years, 325 days). Interment at Acacia Cemetery, Mendota Heights, Minn.

  Robert Joseph Wells (1856-1941) — of Breckenridge, Wilkin County, Minn. Born in Mazomanie, Dane County, Wis., October 4, 1856. Newspaper editor; lawyer; member of Minnesota state house of representatives 60th District, 1901-10. Baptist. Died in Winter Haven, Polk County, Fla., February 12, 1941 (age 84 years, 131 days). The Political Graveyard

The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
 
  The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.
