      Orion Clemens (1825-1897) — of Hannibal, Marion County, Mo.; Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa; Carson City, Nev. Born in Missouri, October 6, 1825. Son of John Marshall Clemens (1798-1847). Newspaper publisher; lawyer; secretary of Nevada Territory, 1861-64; member of Nevada state house of representatives, 1865. Died in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, December 11, 1897 (age 72 years, 66 days). Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
      Relatives: Son of John Marshall Clemens (1798-1847); married, December 19, 1854, to Mary E. 'Mollie' Stotts; brother of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910; author and humorist, best known as 'Mark Twain').

Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; U.S. Representative from Missouri, 1879-95 (12th District 1879-83, 1st District 1883-95). Died December 23, 1896 (age 63 years, 103 days). Interment at Riverside Cemetery.

      Gilchrist Porter (1817-1894) — of Missouri. Born in Virginia, 1817. U.S. Representative from Missouri 2nd District, 1851-53, 1855-57. Died in 1894 (age about 77 years). Interment at Riverside Cemetery.

      Alfred William Lamb (1824-1888) — of Hannibal, Marion County, Mo. Born in Stamford, Delaware County, N.Y., March 18, 1824. Democrat. U.S. Representative from Missouri 2nd District, 1853-55; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Missouri, 1876. Died April 29, 1888 (age 64 years, 42 days). Interment at Riverside Cemetery.

      George Howell Shields (1842-1924) — of Missouri. Born in Bardstown, Nelson County, Ky., June 19, 1842. Republican. Member of Missouri state house of representatives, 1871; candidate for justice of Missouri state supreme court, 1872; delegate to Missouri state constitutional convention 29th District, 1875; Missouri Republican state chair, 1876-80; circuit judge in Missouri, 1907-13, 1915-20. Died April 27, 1924 (age 81 years, 313 days). Interment at Riverside Cemetery.

Lawyer; member of Missouri state house of representatives, 1840-44; candidate for Presidential Elector for Missouri, 1844, 1848, 1852; delegate to Missouri state constitutional convention 3rd District, 1845-46; U.S. Representative from Missouri 2nd District, 1857-61. Died in Palmyra, Marion County, Mo., March 6, 1885 (age 76 years, 88 days). Interment at City Cemetery.

    Massey Mill Cemetery
    Near Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri
    Politicians buried here:
      George F. Shannon (c.1785-1836) — also known as "Peg Leg" — of St. Charles, St. Charles County, Mo. Born in a log cabin in Washington County, Pa., about 1785. Youngest member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, 1804-06; lawyer; member of Kentucky state house of representatives, 1820-24; circuit judge in Kentucky; U.S. Attorney for Missouri, 1829-34. Irish ancestry. Member, Freemasons. Wounded in a skirmish with Indians in 1807 and lost a leg. Shannon's Creek, a tributary of the Yellowstone River, is named for him. Died, in a hotel at Palmyra, Marion County, Mo., August 30, 1836 (age about 51 years). Interment at Massey Mill Cemetery.
      Relatives: Married 1813 to Ruth Snowden Price; brother of Thomas Shannon, James Shannon and Wilson Shannon; granduncle of Isaac Charles Parker. See Shannon family.

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
