Democrat. Lawyer; served in the U.S. Army during World War II; member of California state assembly, 1949-52; U.S. Representative from California, 1953-67 (14th District 1953-63, 18th District 1963-67); defeated, 1966; delegate to Democratic National Convention from California, 1956 (alternate), 1960, 1964. Member, American Legion; Farm Bureau; Grange; Elks; Eagles; Moose; Exchange Club. Died November 25, 1990 (age 76 years, 48 days). Member of Minnesota state house of representatives, 1937-47; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Minnesota, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960; Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate for Governor of Minnesota, 1948. Protestant. Member, Freemasons; Elks; Lions; Moose; Odd Fellows. Burial location unknown.
