Newspaper publisher; Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, 1919-23; secretary of state of Ohio, 1927-33; candidate for Governor of Ohio, 1934; delegate to Republican National Convention from Ohio, 1936, 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964; U.S. Representative from Ohio 7th District, 1939-65; died in office 1965; member of Republican National Committee from Ohio, 1944-64; Vice-Chair of Republican National Committee, 1959. Methodist. Member, Freemasons; Elks; Eagles; Junior Order; Rotary; Exchange Club. Died in Washington, D.C., August 23, 1965 (age 72 years, 40 days). Interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

      James William Denver (1817-1892) — also known as James W. Denver — Born near Winchester, Frederick County, Va., October 23, 1817. Served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War; member of California state senate, 1852-53; secretary of state of California, 1853-55; U.S. Representative from California at-large, 1855-57; secretary of Kansas Territory, 1857-58; Governor of Kansas Territory, 1857-58, 1858, 1858; general in the Union Army during the Civil War; candidate for U.S. Representative from Ohio, 1866. Killed newspaper editor Edward Gilbert in a duel on August 2, 1852. Died in Washington, D.C., August 9, 1892 (age 74 years, 291 days). Interment at Sugar Grove Cemetery.
      Relatives: Father of Matthew Rombach Denver.
      Denver County, Colo. is named for him.

      Matthew Rombach Denver (1870-1954) — also known as Matthew R. Denver; M. R. Denver — of Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio. Born in Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, December 21, 1870. Son of James William Denver. Democrat. Delegate to Democratic National Convention from Ohio, 1896, 1908, 1912, 1924, 1928, 1932; member of Ohio Democratic State Central Committee, 1902-03; U.S. Representative from Ohio 6th District, 1907-13; delegate to Ohio convention to ratify 21st amendment, 1933. Died of coronary thrombosis, in Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, May 13, 1954 (age 83 years, 143 days). Interment at Sugar Grove Cemetery.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
