      Colgate Whitehead Darden, Jr. (1897-1981) — also known as Colgate W. Darden, Jr. — of Norfolk, Va. Born in Southampton County, Va., February 11, 1897. Son of Colgate Whitehead Darden (1867-1945) and Katherine Lawrence (Pretlow) Darden (1870-1936). Democrat. Served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War I; lawyer; member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1930-33; U.S. Representative from Virginia, 1933-37, 1939-41 (at-large 1933-35, 2nd District 1935-37, 1939-41); Governor of Virginia, 1942-46; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Virginia, 1944; president, University of Virginia, 1947. Episcopalian. Died in Norfolk, Va., June 9, 1981 (age 84 years, 118 days). Interment in a private or family graveyard.
      Relatives: Son of Colgate Whitehead Darden (1867-1945) and Katherine Lawrence (Pretlow) Darden (1870-1936); married, December 3, 1927, to Constance Simons Du Pont (1904-2002); brother of Joshua Pretlow Darden.

      George Booth Cary (1811-1850) — of Virginia. Born near Jerusalem (now Courtland), Southampton County, Va., 1811. Democrat. U.S. Representative from Virginia 2nd District, 1841-43. Died in Bethlehem (unknown county), Va., March 5, 1850 (age about 38 years). Interment in a private or family graveyard.

      William Vincent Rawlings (1913-1975) — of Virginia. Born August 17, 1913. Son of Edgar Eley Rawlings (1883-1932) and Irma (Vincent) Rawlings (1886-1948). Member of Virginia state senate. Died December 27, 1975 (age 62 years, 132 days). Interment at Capron Cemetery.

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
