      Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. (1887-1944) — of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, N.Y. Born in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, N.Y., September 13, 1887. Son of Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit (Carow) Roosevelt (1861-1948). Republican. Farmer; colonel in the U.S. Army during World War I; member of New York state assembly from Nassau County 2nd District, 1920-21; delegate to Republican National Convention from New York, 1924, 1928, 1940; candidate for Governor of New York, 1924; Governor of Puerto Rico, 1929-32; general in the U.S. Army during World War II. Member, American Legion. Principal founder of the American Legion in 1919. Participated in the invasion of Nazi-occupied France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his actions that day; died a month later, of exhaustion and heart failure, in Normandy, France, July 12, 1944 (age 56 years, 303 days). Interment at Normandy American Cemetery.
      Relatives: Third great-grandson of Archibald Bulloch; second cousin four times removed of Nicholas Roosevelt, Jr.; great-grandnephew of James I.       Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884) — also known as Judah P. Benjamin; Philippe Benjamin; "Poo Bah of the Confederacy" — of New Orleans, Orleans Parish, La.; London, England; Paris, France. Born in Christiansted, St. Croix, Virgin Islands, August 6, 1811. Son of Philip Benjamin and Rebecca (de Mendes) Benjamin. Lawyer; member of Louisiana state house of representatives, 1842-44; delegate to Louisiana state constitutional convention, 1845; Presidential Elector for Louisiana, 1848; U.S. Senator from Louisiana, 1853-61; Confederate Attorney General, 1861; Confederate Secretary of War, 1861-62; Confederate Secretary of State, 1862-65. Jewish. His portrait appeared on the Confederate States two-dollar note in 1861-64. He fled to Europe in 1865 to avoid arrest by Union forces; he was suspected of involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Fell from a tram car about 1880, and suffered multiple injuries; also developed kidney and heart problems, and died in Paris, France, May 6, 1884 (age 72 years, 274 days). Interment at Père la Chaise Cemetery.
      Relatives: Son of Philip Benjamin and Rebecca (de Mendes) Benjamin; cousin of Henry Michael Hyams; married 1833 to Natalie St. Martin.

Died in Paris, France, December 4, 1967 (age 90 years, 264 days). Interment at Père la Chaise Cemetery.
      Relatives: Son of David Lewis Einstein (1839-1909) and Caroline (Fatman) Einstein (1852-1910); nephew of Edwin Einstein; married 1904 to Helene Ralli (died 1949).

    The Political Graveyard

    The Political Graveyard is a web site about U.S. political history and cemeteries. Founded in 1996, it is the Internet's most comprehensive free source for American political biography, listing 234,420 politicians, living and dead.
     
      The coverage of the site includes (1) the President, Vice President, members of Congress, elected state and territorial officeholders in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; and the chief elected official, typically the mayor, of qualifying municipalities; (2) candidates at election, including primaries, for any of the above; (3) all federal judges and all state appellate judges; (4) certain federal officials, including the federal cabinet, diplomatic chiefs of mission, consuls, U.S. district attorneys, collectors of customs and internal revenue, and members of major federal commissions; and (5) state and national political party officials, including delegates, alternate delegates, and other participants in national party nominating conventions.  
      The listings are incomplete; development of the database is a continually ongoing project.
